Chapter Thirteen

The following Saturday was a beautiful day in Long Beach—certainly not a day for thinking about work, but until the war demands were met the girls didn’t have much choice. After a few hours’ sleep, Virginia and Nellie were on their way to work again. The girls’ shift had changed to the evenings, and it seemed they were scheduled to work every weekend.

Working the hot August days depleted Nellie of most of her energy. The industrial fans in the factory didn’t give much relief from the heat, and it was hot work. With all the overtime she was putting in, once she made it home, there wasn’t much time left to do anything. Baths and cool summer gowns seemed to be the best way to spend the rest of the evening.

The bus stopped a block from the apartment. Nellie couldn’t wait to get out of her hot, sweaty clothes. If she had the energy, she would have liked to have gone out for the evening, she thought, somewhere quiet and cool. She scuttled down the sidewalk, waving a thank-you to Charlie and hoping he remained safe while driving the bus. Nellie stumbled over a bump in the sidewalk as she struggled to pull off her shoes and socks. Off went the hair scarf, too. Her hair was a mess, wet from the sweat, and she pushed it up a little to let the air begin to dry it out. It was still full of curls. She unbuttoned her blouse as low as she could before it became offensive and fanned herself with a war bond flier she’d picked up on the bus. She hoped that even the hot breeze might bring some relief from the sweat running down her cleavage.

She sauntered up the front lawn to the apartment, twirling her scarf around her wrist. She didn’t pay attention to anything around her until her foot was on the first step of the doorway. It was then that she noticed one pair of shiny, neatly polished shoes in full view. Her heart pounded as her eyes followed up the precisely pressed blues. Her visual journey ended with one look into the eyes of the man who held her soul.

“Hello, gorgeous!” Bob’s lecherous introduction caused Nellie to feel weak. She was stunned and felt faint. She carefully sat down on the stairs.

“What are you doing here?” Nellie asked, too shocked to smile or express her immense joy.

“Well, gal, you know, after all those goodbyes we went through together some time ago…well, they never even sent me out!” He smiled and cupped Nellie’s chin lovingly. “I still ship out in a couple weeks, sweetheart, but baby, I’m here tonight! He swept Nellie up in one big swoop from the stairs and twirled her around on the lawn. The celebration landed them eye to eye once the twirling stopped, and it was then that Nellie knew for certain Bob was her guy. She tossed her arms around his neck and rested her head in his chest.
